Amir Abolfathi, CEO
Amir founded Sonitus Medical, Inc. in 2006, leveraging 20 years of experience in founding, building, and managing medical device companies. Prior to Sonitus, Amir served for six years as an Officer, Vice President of R&D at Align Technology Inc. (NASDAQ: ALGN), creators of a unique, invisible orthodontic product. Previously, Amir was the first member of the senior management team at Embolic Protection Inc., where he was a consulting VP of Operations. EPI was successfully acquired by Boston Scientific in 2001. In early 1995, Amir co-founded EndoTex Interventional Systems, developers of minimally invasive solutions for treatment of carotid artery disease, which was also acquired by Boston Scientific in 2006. Amir has also held various management and engineering positions at Pfizer, Guidant, and Baxter-Edwards. As a seasoned entrepreneur, Amir has over 60 issued and pending patent applications, including 11 publications in peer review journals. Amir received his M.S. in Engineering Management from the University of Southern California and a B.S. in Biomedical Engineering from UC San Diego.
Mike Favet, COO
Mike brings over 20 years of medical device industry experience to Sonitus. Prior to joining Sonitus in June 2012, Mike accumulated broad cross-functional experience in medical device companies of various sizes with products in diverse therapeutic areas. Mike served as Senior Vice President of Science, Technology & Operations for Ventus Medical where he led the R&D, manufacturing, clinical, quality, regulatory and reimbursement functions for this venture-backed company with a novel device for the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea. While at Ventus, Mike led the organization through several product launches, the completion and publication of 7 clinical studies, and the scaling up of manufacturing to support commercial launch. Mike also held vice president level positions in R&D and operations in the Cardiac Surgery business units of Guidant, Boston Scientific and Maquet. Additionally, Mike held various positions in the Cardiac Rhythm Management business of Guidant including leadership roles in R&D and project management as well as roles in field clinical, design and manufacturing engineering. Mike received a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Illinois and an MBA from the University of Minnesota.
Jeff Mack, CFO
Jeff joined Sonitus in June 2012 with over 25 years of experience, bringing a strong background with fast-growing, technology-based companies. He has extensive experience in all areas of financial management, including capital events/IPOs, SEC reporting and compliance, M&A and investor relations. Most recently, he was the CFO of Enobia Pharma Corp., a venture and private equity backed biopharmaceutical company focused on the development of therapies to treat patients with ultra-rare and life-threatening genetic metabolic disorders. Enobia was purchased by Alexion Pharmaceutical in February 2012 in an all-cash transaction with a potential value of more than $1 billion. Prior to joining Enobia, Jeff held pivotal roles in successful public offerings and follow-on offerings with several companies. These included cardiovascular device companies Volcano Corporation and Thoratec Corporation, where he served as Vice President, Finance and Corporate Controller. He has also held finance and operations positions with increasing levels of responsibility in a variety of industries, including computer disc drives, resort management and alternative energy. He began his career at Deloitte, Haskins and Sells, a global firm providing auditing, accounting and advisory services. Jeff has a Bachelor of Science degree from California State University, East Bay (formerly Hayward) and is a Certified Public Accountant.
Tim Proulx, Vice President of Research & Development
Tim brings 20 years experience in medical devices and medical imaging to the R&D team at Sonitus. With degrees in biomedical and electrical engineering, Tim has spent most of his career in research and development of advanced diagnostic and therapeutic ultrasound transducers and materials, piezoelectric devices and audio/RF signal processing algorithms. Prior to joining Sonitus, Tim was Director of Systems Development at Cabochon Aesthetics, Inc. which developed a high power ultrasound ablation system for aesthetics procedures. He has also held positions in engineering management and project management at Siemens Medical Solutions (formerly Acuson) and BCTech, Inc. and has considerable experience in medical device regulations and quality systems, including ISO 13485 and IEC 60601 standards. Tim has three issued patents and 10 patents pending, several technical publications and has presented at IEEE UFFC and IHCON technical conferences. Tim is a graduate of Duke University and Stanford University and currently serves on the Duke University BME Undergraduate Advisory Board.
