Hearing Loss Treatment with SoundBite Hearing System
Once the SoundBite hearing system is available for sale, the following process is envisioned for a patient to obtain the system. Treatment is intended to begin with a visit to an Ear, Nose, & Throat doctor (also known as an ENT doctor, otolaryngologist, or otologist). Following this visit, the next step will be for the patient to be referred to a Sonitus certified partner dentist for dental consultation.
Making the ITM (In the Mouth) Hearing Device
The role of the Sonitus certified partner dentist will be to examine the patient for dental health and take a dental impression. Before dental impressions are taken, the partner dentist will evaluate the patient's oral health and structures to assure that there are no oral health issues that preclude the use of the SoundBite hearing system. Once the dental professional determines that the patient is well-suited for the device, dental impressions will be taken and sent to Sonitus Medical.
From the impression, Sonitus Medical will fabricate the custom made ITM (in the mouth) hearing device for maximum fit and comfort. The device, which fits around either the upper left or right back teeth, will be fabricated to the patient's individual teeth and mouth characteristics by Sonitus Medical. The fabrication process is expected to take approximately 1 to 2 weeks.
Fitting, Adjusting and Using the SoundBite Hearing System
Upon its completion, the ITM device will be sent to the Ear, Nose, & Throat physician for fitting. Most likely, the in-office audiologist will fit the device for the patient and make any needed adjustments. In the event that significant adjustment is needed to ensure an appropriate fit, the patient will need to return to the partner dentist.
It is expected that the patient will be given two ITMs, a small microphone unit worn behind the ear, and an inductive charger for both of these components. The physician or audiologist will help the patient with proper placement of both the behind the ear unit and the ITM device, and will orient the patient to the usage and maintenance of the SoundBite hearing system. The patient will be guided on adjusting the sound, charging the components, and cleaning the ITM device.
